Still Life Photography

Photography of inanimate objects arranged deliberately by the photographer.

In depth

Because nothing moves and nothing is discovered, every element is a decision — which makes still life the purest study of light and composition available. It is also the traditional training ground for commercial work, since the same control of specular highlights and shadow shape underpins all product photography.

Examples in practice

A single pear lit by one window and one black card teaches more about form than any lighting diagram.
