Landscape Photography

Photography of natural or altered land, sea and sky, often concerned with light, weather and a sense of place.

In depth

The genre's real subject is usually light rather than terrain, which is why so much of the work is planning and waiting — the same viewpoint gives entirely different pictures in different conditions. Technically it favours deep depth of field, tripods, graduated filters and the hour either side of sunrise and sunset.

Examples in practice

A photographer returns to the same ridge on six mornings before the mist and the light arrive together.
