Fine Art Photography

Photography made primarily as an expressive work rather than to document, illustrate or sell a product.

In depth

The category is defined by intent and context rather than by subject or technique — the same picture can be documentary in a newspaper and fine art on a gallery wall. In practice it implies a body of work with an argument, a considered physical presentation, and often an edition that governs how the print circulates.

Examples in practice

A series of fifteen prints in an edition of eight, sequenced for a gallery wall, is presented as one work.
