The movement of the 1970s that established colour as a serious medium for art photography rather than a commercial or amateur one.
In depth
Colour had been dismissed as vulgar and impermanent by an art world committed to black and white. William Eggleston's 1976 solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art was widely derided at the time and is now seen as the turning point, after which colour became simply another descriptive choice.
