Editorial Photography
Photography made to accompany published text — articles, features and interviews — rather than to advertise.
In depth
Editorial work pays less than advertising and grants far more freedom, which is why many photographers use it to build a body of work. Its licensing is correspondingly narrow: an editorial licence covers use alongside the article and does not permit promotional use, a distinction that matters legally as well as commercially.
Examples in practice
A magazine commissions a portrait for a profile piece, licensed for that issue and its online version only.
