A portrait made in a setting that tells the viewer something about the subject's life, work or identity.

The surroundings are not background but evidence, so composition must give them enough room to be read — which usually means a wider lens, a smaller subject in the frame, and greater depth of field than a studio portrait would use. The risk is clutter, and the discipline is choosing which details earn their place.
