The baryta layer sits between the base and the ink-receiving coating, giving the brilliant reflective ground that produces deep blacks and a subtle sheen. It has become the default choice for exhibition prints because it bridges the crispness of gloss with the surface character of a traditional silver print.

A baryta print reaches a maximum density near 2.4, far deeper than a matte rag paper can manage.
