Photography of animals in their natural environment, generally without interference or baiting.

The genre is defined by its constraints: the subject is unpredictable, usually distant and easily disturbed, and the ethical standard is that the animal's welfare outranks the photograph. That means long lenses, fieldcraft, patience and a willingness to leave — and it means baiting, nest disturbance and captive subjects passed off as wild are serious breaches.
