Street Photography

Candid photography of everyday life in public places, made without directing the subject.

In depth

The genre depends on anticipation rather than reaction: the photographer finds a situation — a light, a background, a geometry — and waits for the human element that completes it. Its ethics are debated constantly, since the subjects have not consented, and its legality varies considerably between countries.

Examples in practice

Waiting beside a doorway with good light until someone with the right gesture walks into it.
