Stroboscopic Flash

Firing a flash repeatedly during a single long exposure, recording a sequence of positions in one frame.

Formula / rule Positions = frequency × duration
Measured in Hz

In depth

The flash's frequency and the exposure length together determine how many images appear, and the subject must move across the frame rather than within one area or the images will overlap. A dark background is essential, since anything the ambient light records will accumulate across the whole exposure.

Examples in practice

Ten flashes per second across a two-second exposure record twenty positions of a golf swing in one frame.
