Photogrammetry

Deriving three-dimensional measurements and models from a set of overlapping photographs.

Measured in count

In depth

Software identifies features appearing in multiple images, computes each camera's position, and builds a point cloud and textured mesh from the geometry. Good results need consistent diffuse lighting, generous overlap between frames, deep depth of field and a subject with visible surface texture — reflective and featureless objects defeat it entirely.

Examples in practice

Two hundred overlapping frames of a stone carving produce a measurable 3D model accurate to a few millimetres.
