Water Drop Photography

High-speed macro photography of falling liquid, capturing splashes, crowns and colliding droplets.

Measured in ms

In depth

The technique depends on precise timing rather than fast reflexes: a controller releases drops at set intervals and fires the flash a measured number of milliseconds later, so the same collision can be repeated until the timing is right. Thickening the liquid and adding colour make the structures hold their shape long enough to be seen.

Examples in practice

A controller drops two beads 60 ms apart and fires the flash 320 ms later, catching the collision umbrella.
