Stop Motion
Animation created by photographing an object frame by frame, moving it slightly between exposures.
Measured in
fps
In depth
Twelve to twenty-four frames per second of playback means twelve to twenty-four separate adjustments and exposures for every second of finished footage. Everything must stay constant between frames — lighting, exposure, white balance, camera position — so manual settings and a locked-off tripod are absolute requirements.
Examples in practice
Ten seconds of finished animation at 12 fps requires 120 individually posed and photographed frames.
