Stochastic Screening
A halftoning method using dots of fixed size distributed in a randomised pattern rather than a regular grid.

Also called frequency-modulated screening, it varies the number of dots per area rather than their size. Because there is no regular grid, it cannot produce moiré against patterned subjects and it resolves finer detail than conventional screening. It demands tighter press control, since small dots are more sensitive to variation.
Examples in practice
A catalogue containing fabric samples is printed stochastically to avoid moiré against the weave patterns.
