Viewing Booth

An enclosure providing standardised, controlled illumination for judging prints and proofs.

Measured in K, lux

In depth

The graphic arts standard specifies D50 illumination at 2,000 lux with neutral grey surroundings, so that everyone assessing a proof sees it identically. Judging a print under a domestic lamp or a north-facing window produces inconsistent decisions, since both the colour temperature and the intensity vary constantly.

Examples in practice

Two printers in different cities agree on a proof because both judge it in a D50 booth.
