Sports Photography

Photography of athletic competition, capturing peak action, effort and outcome.

In depth

Success depends less on reflexes than on knowledge of the sport: knowing where the play is going lets the photographer be pointing at it already. Technically it demands fast lenses, reliable subject tracking, high frame rates and shutter speeds of 1/1000 s or beyond, plus a position chosen hours before the event.

Examples in practice

A photographer pre-focuses on the try line because they know where the move must end.
