Self-portrait

A photograph in which the photographer is also the subject.

In depth

Working alone removes the negotiation of ordinary portraiture and replaces it with total control, which is why self-portraiture has been so central to artists exploring identity, the body and performance. It is also a practical discipline: nothing teaches lighting faster than having to set it, sit in it, and review the result.

Examples in practice

A tethered camera on a tripod lets the photographer adjust the key light between frames while remaining the subject.
