A short-lived Japanese photography magazine of 1968-70 whose grainy, blurred, high-contrast style challenged documentary convention.

The style, summarised as are-bure-boke — rough, blurred, out of focus — rejected the idea that a photograph should describe clearly, using instability and degradation to convey the disorientation of postwar Japan. Only three issues appeared, yet its influence on contemporary photography has been enormous.
