Photographic Ethics
The body of principles governing how photographers treat subjects, audiences and the truthfulness of their images.
In depth
Ethical questions arise at three stages: making the picture, processing it, and publishing it. Standards differ sharply by context — what is required in journalism is optional in art and irrelevant in advertising — so the first ethical act is being clear about which set of rules the work is claiming to follow.
Examples in practice
A composite acceptable in an advertisement would end a career if published as news.
