A final stage of sharpening tailored to the size, medium and viewing distance of the finished image.

Different outputs need different amounts: screen images at small sizes need relatively strong, small-radius sharpening, while inkjet prints need more because ink spreads slightly into the paper. Because it depends entirely on final dimensions, it must be applied after resizing and separately for every intended output.
Examples in practice
The same file needs noticeably more sharpening for a matte fine-art print than for an Instagram post.
