Printing, Display & Output

Inkjet Printing

Printing by spraying microscopic droplets of ink onto paper, the dominant method for photographic and fine-art output.

Measured in dpi

In depth

Photographic inkjets use eight to twelve inks, including several greys that give monochrome prints their neutrality and tonal separation. Because each print is generated individually there are no plates and no minimum run, which makes it economic for a single exhibition print and expensive for a thousand.

Examples in practice

A twelve-ink printer produces a neutral black and white print using four grey inks alongside the colour set.
