Sensor-shift systems correct five axes — pitch, yaw, roll and two shift directions — where lens-based systems typically handle two, and they work with any lens including fully manual ones. Their limitation is physical: the sensor can only move so far, which makes them less effective at very long focal lengths where the required correction is larger.
Examples in practice
A body with five-axis stabilisation allows a half-second handheld exposure with a 35 mm lens.
