Brushless motors on each axis counteract the operator's movement continuously, producing gliding shots that no handheld technique can match. The camera must be mechanically balanced on all three axes before the motors are switched on, or they fight gravity constantly and drain the battery while performing poorly.
Examples in practice
A balanced gimbal lets an operator walk backwards up a staircase while the horizon stays perfectly level.
