Because it operates on the recorded image rather than the optics, digital stabilisation costs angle of view — typically ten to thirty per cent — and cannot recover detail lost to blur within a frame. It excels at smoothing walking motion in video, where it is often combined with gyroscopic data recorded alongside the footage.
Examples in practice
Enabling enhanced digital stabilisation crops a 24 mm view to about 30 mm while removing walking wobble.
