Enthalpy Level Diagram

A diagram plotting the enthalpies of reactants and products to show the direction and size of the enthalpy change.

Unit kJ/mol

In depth

Products are drawn below the reactants for an exothermic reaction and above for an endothermic one, with the vertical gap representing ΔH. Adding the transition state gives a full reaction profile, in which the activation energy appears as the height of the barrier.

Examples in the real world

A diagram showing methane and oxygen 890 kJ above carbon dioxide and water.
