A calorimeter isolates the reaction thermally so that the heat released or absorbed can be inferred from the temperature change of a known mass of surrounding material. Corrections for the calorimeter's own heat capacity and for heat leakage are essential for accurate results.

Using a polystyrene cup calorimeter for a neutralisation reaction, and a bomb calorimeter for combustion.
