Electric Power

The rate at which electrical energy is transferred, converted, or dissipated by an electric circuit component per unit time.

Governing formula P = V I = I² R = V² / R
SI unit W (Watts = J/s)

In depth

Power dissipated across resistive elements converts electrical potential energy into thermal heat (Joule heating). Utility companies measure household electrical energy consumption in kilowatt-hours (1 kWh = 3.6 MJ).

Examples in the real world

A 1500 W electric space heater drawing 12.5 A of current from a 120 V AC supply outlet.
