Its primaries are so saturated that no current display can reproduce them fully, so Rec. 2020 functions as a container: content is mastered within it while actually staying inside the smaller P3 gamut that real screens can show. It pairs with high dynamic range transfer functions rather than the conventional gamma curve.
Examples in practice
An HDR film is mastered in Rec. 2020 but its colours are confined to P3 so today's televisions can display them correctly.
