The radial filter is the practical tool for drawing attention: brightening slightly inside the ellipse, or darkening outside it, creates a subtle spotlight that guides the eye without being consciously noticed. Inverting the selection switches between affecting the subject and affecting its surroundings.
Examples in practice
A radial filter at −0.4 EV outside an ellipse over the subject creates an unobtrusive natural-looking vignette.
