HEIF
A modern container format using video-derived compression to store images at roughly half the size of JPEG for equivalent quality.
Measured in
MB
In depth
HEIF supports ten-bit colour, transparency, image sequences, depth maps and multiple images in one file, all of which JPEG cannot. Its adoption has been slowed by patent licensing and uneven software support, so it is common on phones and cameras and still awkward to hand to a client or a printer.
Examples in practice
A ten-bit HEIF holds smoother sky gradients than an eight-bit JPEG at half the file size.
