Files, Metadata & Workflow

Catalogue Backup

A copy of the catalogue database, holding every rating, keyword, collection and editing decision.

Measured in MB

In depth

Image files can be restored from any backup, but the years of organisation held in a catalogue exist in one database, usually in a proprietary format. Losing it means the files survive and the work of describing them does not. Writing metadata to sidecars as well provides a second, software-independent copy.

Examples in practice

A corrupted catalogue is restored from the previous night's backup, losing one day rather than eight years of keywording.
