Raw File Format

A camera-specific file holding minimally processed sensor data together with the metadata needed to interpret it.

Measured in MB

In depth

Every manufacturer uses its own container — CR3, NEF, ARW, RAF, ORF — and each is proprietary and undocumented, which is the strongest practical argument for converting to an open format for archiving. In exchange for size and an obligatory processing step, raw preserves full bit depth, unbaked white balance and the widest possible latitude.

Examples in practice

A 45-megapixel raw file occupies about 55 MB against 12 MB for the camera's own JPEG of the same frame.
