Ingest
The controlled process of copying images from a memory card into the working system, with verification and renaming.
In depth
A proper ingest does four things: copies to at least two destinations, verifies each file against a checksum, applies a naming convention, and writes baseline metadata. Dragging files in a file manager does none of these, which is why dedicated ingest tools exist and why cards should never be formatted until verification has passed.
