A camera setting that reduces contrast and saturation to retain more information for later adjustment, without the full complexity of log.

A flat profile is a milder version of the same idea: it lowers the tone curve's slope so highlights and shadows survive, while remaining close enough to a normal image that minimal grading is needed. It suits eight-bit recording, where full log can band badly under heavy correction.
