Simultaneous writing to both cards is the only true in-camera redundancy against card failure, which is why it is effectively mandatory for weddings and other unrepeatable events. Overflow mode extends capacity instead, and split mode can send raw to one card and JPEG to the other for fast delivery. Mixed slot types often mean the slower card throttles the burst rate in backup mode.
