Capture Sharpening

A modest first stage of sharpening applied to compensate for softening introduced by the sensor, the low-pass filter and demosaicing.

Measured in %

In depth

Every digital capture is slightly soft by construction, so capture sharpening restores what the process took rather than adding an effect. It is applied at a small radius across the whole image, early in the workflow, and it should be invisible as sharpening — the image should simply look correctly rendered.

Examples in practice

A default capture sharpening of amount 40 at radius 1.0 removes the slight softness inherent in demosaicing.
