Control Variable

Any experimental parameter held strictly constant throughout an investigation to isolate the relationship between independent and dependent variables.

SI unit Various

In depth

Uncontrolled variables introduce confounding errors and systematic bias, making it impossible to determine whether changes in the dependent variable were caused by the independent variable.

Examples in the real world

Keeping pendulum bob mass, release angle, and ambient air temperature constant while testing length effects.
