Star Rating
A one-to-five scale applied during culling to mark an image's quality or priority.
Measured in
stars (0-5)
In depth
Ratings work best with an agreed meaning — one star for keep, three for deliver, five for portfolio — applied consistently across years. Because ratings are written into standard metadata, they survive a change of software, which colour labels and proprietary flags sometimes do not.
Examples in practice
Filtering an archive to five-star images produces a portfolio shortlist spanning a decade of work.
