A scene illuminated by two or more sources of different colour temperature, which cannot all be neutralised at once.

With window light at 6000 K and tungsten at 3000 K in the same room, any single white balance leaves one source badly cast. The three real answers are to gel the artificial sources to match the daylight, to remove one source entirely, or to accept the mix and use it — warm interior against cool window is a familiar and often attractive combination.
Examples in practice
Gelling a flash with full CTO lets it blend with the room's tungsten lamps so one white balance serves the whole frame.
