3D LUT

A look-up table that maps colours in three dimensions, so a transformation can change hue and saturation as well as tone.

Measured in cube size (17, 33, 65)

In depth

A one-dimensional LUT can only adjust each channel independently, which limits it to curves. A three-dimensional table addresses every combination of red, green and blue, allowing a transformation that turns one specific colour without affecting others. Larger cube sizes give finer resolution and larger files.

Examples in practice

A 33-point 3D LUT converts a camera's log footage to Rec. 709 while shaping skin tones in a specific way.
