Embedded Preview
A JPEG rendering stored inside a raw file, used for camera playback and fast browsing before conversion.
Measured in
px
In depth
The preview reflects the camera's own picture style, which is why a flat raw file can look contrasty on the rear screen and dull when first opened in a converter. It is also what the histogram and highlight warnings are calculated from, meaning both are slightly more pessimistic than the raw data actually warrants.
Examples in practice
A raw file shot with a punchy picture profile shows vivid colour on the camera screen and neutral colour in the converter.
