Cotton contains no lignin, the compound in wood pulp that yellows and embrittles paper as it ages, so a hundred-per-cent rag sheet is naturally archival without chemical buffering. Its matte surface scatters light, which limits maximum black but gives a tactile, painterly quality valued for fine-art work.
Examples in practice
A cotton rag print reaches a lower maximum black than baryta but holds a softer, more three-dimensional surface.
