Compact Camera

A small fixed-lens camera designed to be carried everywhere, with automatic exposure and focus as the default.

In depth

Smartphones destroyed the low end of this market, but the premium compact survived by offering a large sensor and a fast prime in a pocketable body. Its argument has always been presence rather than specification: the best camera is the one you actually have, and a compact removes almost every reason to leave it behind.

Examples in practice

A pocket compact with a 28 mm f/1.7 lens and a one-inch sensor produces files that hold up to A3 prints.
