A monopod cannot hold a camera on its own, so it does not replace a tripod for long exposures, but it typically buys two to three stops of handholding and takes the weight of a heavy lens off the arms. Its footprint is a single point, which is why it is permitted in stadiums and galleries where tripods are banned.
