Titration
A quantitative technique in which a solution of known concentration is added to another until the reaction between them is exactly complete.
Formula / equation
n₁ / n₂ = a / b
Unit
mol/L
In depth
The volume delivered at the end point, read from a burette, gives the amount of titrant used and hence the unknown concentration through the reaction stoichiometry. Titration is fast, cheap and remarkably accurate, routinely achieving better than 0.2% precision.
Examples in the real world
Standardising a sodium hydroxide solution against a weighed sample of potassium hydrogenphthalate.
