Precipitation Titration

A titration in which the analyte and titrant combine to form an insoluble product.

Formula / equation Ag⁺ + Cl⁻ → AgCl(s)
Unit mol/L

In depth

Silver nitrate titrations of halides are the main practical example, with end points detected by chromate forming red silver chromate (Mohr), by an adsorption indicator (Fajans), or by back-titrating excess silver with thiocyanate (Volhard).

Examples in the real world

Determining the chloride content of seawater or of a processed food by the Mohr method.
