Standardisation

The determination of the exact concentration of a solution by titrating it against a primary standard.

Formula / equation M₁V₁ / n₁ = M₂V₂ / n₂
Unit mol/L

In depth

Standardisation converts an approximately prepared solution into a reliable analytical tool. Best practice repeats the titration until concordant titres agreeing within 0.10 mL are obtained, and averages only those values.

Examples in the real world

Titrating 25.00 mL of approximately 0.1 M NaOH against weighed potassium hydrogenphthalate.
