Nucleic Acid

A biopolymer of nucleotides that stores and transmits genetic information.

Unit Dimensionless

In depth

Nucleic acids have a backbone of alternating sugar and phosphate units, with bases projecting from each sugar. The sequence of those bases encodes the information, and complementary base pairing provides both the copying mechanism and the route to protein synthesis.

Examples in the real world

DNA carrying the genome; messenger, transfer and ribosomal RNA carrying out its expression.
