Monoprotic Acid

An acid that can donate only one proton per molecule.

Formula / equation HA ⇌ H⁺ + A⁻
Unit mol/L

In depth

Monoprotic acids give simple 1:1 stoichiometry in neutralisation, so their titration curves show a single equivalence point and their molarity equals their normality. Most common laboratory and organic acids belong to this class.

Examples in the real world

Hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, ethanoic acid and benzoic acid.
