Half-Reaction Method

A technique for balancing redox equations by splitting them into separate oxidation and reduction half-equations.

Formula / equation balance atoms, then O with H₂O, H with H⁺, charge with e⁻
Unit Dimensionless

In depth

Also called the ion–electron method, it balances each half-reaction independently before multiplying them so the electrons cancel on addition. In alkaline solution, hydroxide is added to both sides to convert H⁺ into water. The method is preferred for complex ionic reactions.

Examples in the real world

MnO₄⁻ + 8H⁺ + 5e⁻ → Mn²⁺ + 4H₂O combined with Fe²⁺ → Fe³⁺ + e⁻ to balance a permanganate titration.
